Learn in Detail How to Make a luxury Sweater Quilt In a Weekend And Great for Beginners Too
Using simple sewing techniques and an ordinary sewing machine you can make a luxury sweater quilt in just a few days. This video shows the methods and techniques using a one eighth size sample. It breaks down the process into step by step instructions on how to cut out, design, machine sew and hand finish a quilt. Old or unloved sweaters, jumpers, pullovers (or whatever you call them where you live!), can be upcycled and recycled to become a quilt that will be cherished and used all the time. By backing the knits with a lightweight silky material, the knits will retain softness and stretch while maintaining shape.
Over thirty years of making these quilts I have developed my own methods which make it possible to complete one of these quilts quickly.
Most of the special people in my life have received and still enjoy their own luxury quilt.
I made the first quilt when a dear friend was finding it hard to part with some very worn but still loved sweaters made from a silk, wool and cashmere mix. I offered to take the sweaters away and make a quilt.
How many of you have some great knits that you value but never wear?
Wouldnt it be great to be able to enjoy them day to day in the form of a cosy, but reasonably lightweight quilt?
In Australian colonial times and in the early farming days, it was common for people to make Woggas from jute wheat bags covered in hand sewn old clothing. Most of these were strictly utilitarian but some were a work of art. My grandmother made us Woggas from a mix of old clothing and jumpers, as we call them in Australia.
In order to use the most fabric from each sweater, I use a non -pattern design. It is reasonably hard to not have a pattern as our brain is quick to make connections as soon as colour, tone or shape is repeated. While I mostly make quilts from a range of colours , it is also interesting to use a different tones of the same colour and/ or different textures.
And, your knits dont need to be the same type or weight. You can easily combine very thick knits with fine merino knits. You can always layer ulta thin or lacy knits to create a stronger patch.
This is my very first YouTube video, scary! I would love to hear your feedback and learn about your journey in making your own special quilt.
