Jason Roberts - Challenges and Lessons Learned Mapping CDA to FHIR | DevDays 2024

The CDA standard, and specifically CCD, is a mainstay of HIEs and interoperability across the US and in many other parts of the world. There is a large installed base of applications that exchange healthcare data using this standard. In order for a FHIR repository to interoperate with these applications, it is necessary to convert CDA documents into FHIR resources. However, both standards are large and complex, and the mapping between them is not easy. We discuss some of the challenges we encountered developing a mapping between the two standards, and the approaches we took to solve them. Specific challenges discussed include data type and cardinality mismatches, missing data, and vocabulary translation.
