Córdoba died about 10 weeks later, and Alvarenga survived alone for 438

days, eating fish, birds, turtles and drinking rainwater. He was rescued in 2014 in the Marshall Islands, thousands of kilometers from where he set sail.

In 2015, after the book 438 Days was released, Córdoba's family filed a lawsuit against Alvarenga for $1 million, accusing him of cannibalism. Alvarenga denies having eaten his companion and claims that he respected the promise he made to the family not to touch the body.

The lawsuit generated controversy, but there is no concrete evidence to support the accusation. Experts point out that, even if the body had been consumed, the courts could consider the situation a state of necessity.
