The headgear and the palatal expander are two types of orthodontics that may be used in patients who have not developed the maxilla correctly.

The palatal expander serves to open the palatal suture before it consolidates over age 16 in patients with a narrow maxilla. That is, it is used to expand the palate in those patients whose palate is too narrow and before they have completed their growing age.

In cases of jaws that are not very developed with respect to the mandible, the extraoral traction mask or headgear is also used. This facial mask is used to pull the jaw in case it is underdeveloped in patients who have not finished their growth phase. With the extraoral traction mask it is possible to correct and achieve a correct relationship of the maxilla with respect to the mandible.
