This film "The Dream Makers" was made by Gillian Cummings in 1972 on behalf of the Cryonics Society of New York (CSNY) and presumably the affiliated Cryo-Span Corp. The film shows Cummings' deceased father being frozen in hopes that he can be re-animated in the future. The film features CSNY President and cyronics pioneer Curtis Henderson and Cummings discussing the concept of cryonics. This is the practice of preserving individuals at very low temperatures after death with the hope that future scientific advancements will allow them to be revived and cured of the conditions that caused their death. The film explains the process of freezing bodies, and choses to do so with minimal attempts to hide the rudimentary process used by Cryo-Span Corporation in its work. The film also attempts to explain the rationale behind the idea of cryonics, and the potential future benefits. It also includes personal stories and reflections on the emotional and practical aspects of choosing cryonics over traditional burial methods.
CNSY was founded sometime after 1965, and in 1968 held its first Annual Cryonics Conference at the New York Academy of Sciences, a meeting attended by over one hundred people. In July of that same year, CSNY cryopreserved its first patient, Steven Mandell. In 1969 Cryo-Span Corporation was created as a distinct entity from CSNY, which was primarily an educational organization. Cryo-Span specialized in the technical and business aspects of cryopreservation. In 1974, the entire enterprise suffered a setback when the New York Dept. of Public Health determined that cryonics was a violation of the law. The bodies of the three patients being maintained were returned to their relatives (it's not clear if this included Cummings' father). Work continued in the field; Henderson was very active in the Alcor Life Extension Foundation, CryoCare Foundation and the Cryonics Institute. Upon his death in 2009, he was cryopreserved.
• 0:48: The fllm starts with a man using a postal machine to hand cancel fliers. His child observes. The film then shows operations at CNSY / Cryo-Span Corp.
• 1:55: The narrator clarifies that the program is about "suspended death," not suspended animation.
• 2:10: Explanation of freezing a body after natural death to prevent deterioration. Discussion on the preservation of bodies using liquid nitrogen.
• 3:07: The body is considered dead but not irreversibly dead. The goal is to store bodies until future science can revive and cure them.
• 4:02: Clarification that death occurs gradually, and freezing can preserve potential life.Definition of death depends on current medical capabilities.
• 5:48: Freezing offers a second chance, unlike burial. Mention of a permanent mailing list for information seekers.
• 6:57: Experiments on freezing and reanimating tissues are discussed. View of a VW bus with the Cryo-Span Corp. logo on the door.
• 8:06: Comparison of wrestling an alligator to the process described.Challenges faced by next of kin in arranging freezing.
• 9:02: Freezing is seen as more attractive than burial. Quote from science guru Linus Pauling about future discoveries.
• 10:07: Enthusiasm for future scientific advancements.
• 11:00: Cryonics work by Curtis Henderson is highlighted.
• 11:15: Personal reflections on freezing a loved one.
• 12:01: Description of the dry ice box used for initial cooling.
• 12:56: Personal story about the speaker's father's sudden death and subsequent freezing.
• 14:00: Emotional reaction to the father's death and decision to freeze him.
• 15:00: Process of contacting cryonics organizations and arranging the freezing.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
