The name of the well comes from the phrase Zomë Zomë, meaning "stop flowing", a command repeated by #Hajar during her attempt to contain the spring water. Alternative spellings include Zam Zam, Zam-Zam, Zemzem, Zem Zem, and Zem-Zem.
