Lake District - Solo Mountain Camp Above Red Tarn

Lake District Wild Camping. Hilleberg Soulo mountain camp in the Lake District on Catstyecam - leaving Patterdale my route takes me into Grisedale and the ascent to Birkhouse Moor and Hole in the Wall. Red Tarn, below Helvellyn, is a popular camping spot but I prefer the quieter areas so gave this a miss. I have camped at a frozen Red Tarn in February 2018. From Red Tarn I continued the ascent around its north side towards Swirrel Edge then, rather than continuing up Swirrel Edge, turned east and headed up to the summit of Catstyecam. Being surrounded by the popular attractions of Red Tarn, Helvellyn, Striding Edge, and Swirrel Edge, Catstyecam is often overlooked and far less visited; just the type of mountain I like. At 2920ft (890m) Catstycam makes it into the top ten highest mountains in the Lake District, at No10. After a cloudy and windy night in my Hilleberg Soulo I thought my chances of a spectacular sunrise were gone, but I was wrong. It was amazing and I also experienced my first Brocken Spectre.

In the morning my return followed the descent of Red Tarn Beck to Glenridding Common, and around the eastern end of Birkhouse Moor, through Brownend Plantation and arriving back at Patterdale.

Many thanks for watching - Dave
