Double Yellow Head Amazon parrots oratrix and magna. #parrots
We continue to get emails, messages and phone calls on the descriptions and ID of subspecies of double yellow head amazon parrots. I guess its breeding season and hobbyist backyard breeders are offering baby birds and many buyers are confused at what type or species they are getting or have got. Many if not most double yellow head amazons available in the USA are basically a heinz 57 mix of several type and races of double yellow and yellow crown amazons. This short video has couple comparisons with pictures. But due to some #bird #birdbreeder not separating subspecies and properly pairing breeder birds, the proper ID of birds today has become difficult due to mixing the races, geo types and subspecies. This video shows a very colorful male true magna double yellow head amazon. He is a descendent 4th generation from stock that we actually purchased at USDA import in the 1989. These government sales were by the the US Fish and Wildlife agency. The birds were confiscated by the border patrol in mission, mcallen, tx from a smuggler that had a load of adult birds he had aquired in campece mexico and other points up across the eastern mexican slopes and according to him was destined for a bird collector breeder in NY. After the court date of the smuggler the evidence(birds) were sold to the registered public. We were one of these registered public in 1989. The birds were put through a stringent quarantine, tested for every imaginable illness. The government spent more money testing than most people can afford even today. The birds were released and sold with health certificates free of over 20 tested illnesses, parasites, viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens. As soon as we saw them at the usda compound at moore airforce base in texas. we knew what they were, along with information from the fish wildlife agents where they actually were trapped or bought we knew they were true magna subspecies or as some call them, eastern double yellow head amazons. The fish and wildlife agent we talked to was actually one of the agents in charge of the case, he stated, these birds are much different than what we normally see coming over. They are larger, have extensive yellow and the green color is different. He said that the smuggler had orders to only purchase or trap certain birds in certain areas in the eastern provinces around eastern carribean slopes of mexico. We purchased several lots of 10 on the first day. and 2 years later were sent another notice that more pet birds from that area was being sold again, we sent out rsvp and registered with the USDA auction dynatrend corp. for the sale. We again saw a shipment of 50 parrots mostly amazons, we again saw double yellow heads that were completely different from the oratrix nominate species, So, knowing that these birds were basically virgin breeding stock from the wilds of eastern mexico, we knew what they were, where they came from, and was sure they were full species and not crossed with other subspecies. We separated them and sexed them and paired only the same with same, and we have kept it that way for over 30 years. 4 generations of controlled selective breeding. Many if not most breeders in the usa may not know what they have due to crossing subspecies over the years. But we actually do know what we have, as we collected our stock from the source And only breeding same with same.,,This is called responsible aviculture.. for more info on our programs, visit the website royalbirdcompany.com. #amazonparrots #babyparrots #parrot #parrotbreeder #birdbreeder #parroteggs #magnadoubleyellowheadamazons #amazonpets
