Mars Yard 2.5 \\\ Nike

Tom Sachs is the artist whose work I'm most drawn to. His collaboration with Nike is no different. I tried my best to get a pair of Mars Yard 2.0 but couldn't get in before they sold out online. They go for around $1000 on eBay now but, as far as I know, Tom doesn't condone selling them and regardless that's out of my budget!

I reached out to Tandy Leather to see if they'd be interested in working together on this and they said yes! Thank you Tandy! Everything I used is linked down below.

I scoured the internet to find a pair of Nike shoes that somewhat resembled the Mars Yard 2.0 that Tom designed. These are as close as I could find, but I'd love to know if there is something closer that I missed. I lined the shoes with several layers of painters tape, drew on the pattern and then cut the pieces off. I used one set of patterns for both shoes. On one side I stuck the patterns to the front of the leather, on the other, I stuck the patterns to the back of the leather. Hope that makes sense!

I hand stitched the edges using a saddle stitch pattern. Ideally, I would have stitched the leather pieces right to the show but it'd be nearly impossible with the sole of the shoe on, and I have no way to remove/ replace it. Instead, I used barge cement to glue the pieces onto the shoe. Off camera, I stitched all the places most likely to lift to the shoe. It was very difficult to pull that off so I'm glad I went with just barge cement for the rest!

Once the barge cement was dry I coated all the leather with a leather finisher. This helps to protect the leather and keeps the dye from bleeding.

The Nike swooshes were dyed red and the rest of the leather is natural. I used cow leather and it wasn't until I started the build that I learned I should have used pig leather. Oh well! The pull loops are made from 1" webbing.

I wouldn't say these are up to Nike standards as far as fit and finish goes, but they turned out surprisingly well! I've been wearing them nonstop since I finished them and they are holding up perfectly so far.

My one complaint is that I didn't account for my foot stretching the shoe when I put it on. I fit the leather to an empty shoe and the small leather piece across the top of the foot took a little breaking in to be comfortable.
