live performance of classical music on steel pan (steel drums) The ensemble is performing Piano Concerto No.1 in d minor by Bach - arranged by Obe Quarless for Steel Pan (steel drums). It was performed live at the Washington Interscholarstic Activities Association (WIAA) Solo & Ensemble Contest April 24, 2005.
The ensemble was comprised of music students at Bellarmine Preparatory School (Tacoma, WA). The classical music is performed on steel drums or, more appropriately, steel pans. Steel pans are originally from country of Trinidad & Tobago in the caribbean. Since their creation in the late 1930s, steel pans have spread all throughout the caribbean, united states, and world. In this performance, you will hear steel pans played out of their traditional genre of calypso music native Trinidad. Rather the steel pans are performing Bach's Piano Concerto No. 1 BWV 1052 in D minor as it was originally written as a classical music piece. The instruments used are Double Second pans, double guitar pans, cello pans, and tenor bass pans. All of the music was arranged by Obe Quarless while he was a high school student. Obe Quarless is also performing the solo part of the music.
