Sunisa Lee Nailed a Huge Win—And Not Only for Herself. Just Look At Her Hands.
The all-around champion’s Olympic-themed nails are both a fashion statement and an extension of her Hmong roots in Minnesota
TOKYO—Sunisa Lee soared into history this week, becoming the first Asian-American woman to achieve gymnastics’s most coveted title: Olympic All-Around Champion. On Sunday, she’ll have another chance to gather more bling in the uneven-bars final, her signature event.

Photos of the 18-year-old holding her new medal have already gone viral on social media, with people commenting on Lee’s shiny, white Olympic-themed acrylic nails and how she was able to clinch gold wearing them.

“the acrylics!? how?? i nearly rip my nail bed off when I tumble in them,” read one post on Tiktok.

“Omg how does she do it w/ those nails? I hate when chalk would get in my nails during bars (but also LOVE HER AMAZING SHE CAN WEAR W/E [whatever] SHE WANTS),” read another.
Lee’s nails are as much a winning fashion statement and testament to her exquisite maneuvering—as they are a subtle extension of her Hmong roots in Minnesota. They were designed and applied by a Hmong nail artist in a Hmong-owned salon in Minneapolis who reached out to Lee as a fan in June and was shocked to get a reply.

In earning her gold medal, Lee has also propelled herself further into hero status. Her triumph over some of the best athletes in the world is serving as inspiration in the small—often insular community—that they too can compete on the world’s stage and succeed magnificently at pursuing their passions.

“There actually have been a bunch of little girls at the gym that are Hmong. They just come up to me and ask for pictures,” said Lee after winning gold. “Their parents will be, like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re such a huge inspiration.”

That’s a departure from messaging that previous Hmong generations, and other minority children and children of immigrants, often hear growing up. The emphasis is usually on pursuing more traditional career tracks, an outlook that can stem from financial instability and fear of discrimination.
