Antique Cane Chair Restoration Part 1
Hi everyone!
Welcome to my first YouTube video.
My name is Dasha. I work as an ESL teacher. And in my free time - I run a small blog on Instagram about restoring furniture.
In this video I am going to show you how I try to bring an antique chair back to life. I got this chair at a “local eBay” at around $60.
Comparing to my usual patients, this chair was actually in a pretty decent shape. I love weaving rattan, i could not say "no" to this chair.
This is part 1 of the restoration processes. I call it - the “get your hands dirty” steps.
I took the whole chair apart. Made a little sketch so I wouldn’t lose any of the screws.
I removed all of the old finish, old cane, the pegs from the holes of the seat and I did a bit of glue ups.
After removing the old finish, I did a lot of scraping, sanding and fill ins. Sanding was done off camera.
A lot of time was spent on preparing the chair for caning. Made the holes on the seat a bit bigger and softened the corners, so the cane wouldn’t snap during weaving.
Part 2 is on the way.
Materials and tools used in the video:
WD40
Paint stripper APS- M10
Aerosol paint stripper APS-M10
Card scrapers by PAX and Petrograd
Wood filler by Borma in light walnut
Wood hardener by Borma
Chisels for carving wood by Petrograd
My mask is from Jeta
If you have any questions - feel free to ask me in the comments.
