Clicks vs Sessions (Search Console vs Analytics)
If you’re confused by the terminology in Google Search Console vs GA4, you aren’t alone.
The biggest mistake I see is people expecting their clicks and sessions to match, but these tools aren’t comparing apples with apples.
While Google Ads and Search Console report on impressions and clicks irrespective of what happens on your site, GA4 is all about sessions and users.
They measure different things, and each comes with its own caveats that add a bit of complexity.
For instance, GA4 reports on “users” but they really mean a device, meaning if someone visits from a mobile and a desktop, it counts as two users.
Then you’ve got the 30-minute session timeout and the fact that you have to take Search Console data with a pinch of salt because of sampling and (a sometimes) meaningless average position.
In this video, I give you a quick explainer ish of the differences, explain why your numbers don’t line up when you start drilling into the information, and share what you should actually be looking at - incliding a little hat tip to high intent commercial keywords.
