polished zinc alloy is starting to make the rounds among scammers trying to sell it as sterling silver...this is the only real way to test without using higher end test equipment.

Zinc alloy will usually pass the magnet test so a chem test is really the only cheap option. I only have a gold acid kit, but it can be used to tell if your item is really silver
