St. Marys Challenger pilothouse move

The Geo. Gradel Company delivered the pilothouse of the St. Marys Challenger to the National Museum of the Great Lakes in Toledo, Ohio on 12/30/21.

After many seasons of sailing as a steam powered vessel, the Challenger was converted to a barge at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin in 2016. The pilothouse was preserved by the NMGL and brought to Toledo on the bow of the Paul R. Tregurtha.

The pilothouse was discharged at Midwest Terminals near the mouth of the Maumee River and was stored there for several seasons. Geo Gradel loaded the pilothouse at Midwest on 12/29 and completed the final stage of the move the next day.

The Challenger pilothouse will soon be a new exhibit at the museum.
