Exchange and Dissemination: Postwar to Contemporary Japanese Art
LOS ANGELES, January 19, 2026 — Curator, dealer, and advisor Jeffrey Deitch and LACMA Associate Curator of Japanese Art Rika Hiro trace the dissemination of postwar and contemporary Japanese art in the United States. Independent curator Mika Yoshitake moderates. (54 min., 19 sec.)
Part of Asia Society Southern California’s U.S.–Japan Initiative Program III, the conversation explores the curatorial history linking Gutai, Mono-ha, and Neo-Pop to today’s leading Japanese artists, and how museums and galleries have shaped their global visibility. Deitch reflects on building relationships with artists such as Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama, while Hiro discusses LACMA’s history of exhibiting Japanese art, her work on the exhibition “Art, Anti-Art, Non-Art: Experimentations in the Public Sphere in Postwar Japan” for the Getty Research Institute, and the recognition gap facing artists based in Japan.
