Asher: I want to be a French-speaking astronaut - AFS x TÉLÉ LOUISIANE

FOUR YEARS IN THE MAKING: Chris Guidroz was among the first 45 parents to sign up for Académie Franco-louisianaise de Sunset's (AFS) first year of (K-1) classes, slated to start in 2020-2021. Additional grades (2-5) will be added as AFS's first class of Kindergarteners and 1st-graders progress.

With 96 desks to fill, we need as many Kindergarteners and 1st graders as we can reach. As of Saturday, February 22, 2020, we have a total of 45. While that may be a tall order, our school has been four years in the making. Our teams of volunteers, media partners, and community organizers have taken on and overcome bigger challenges in a shorter span of time. However, this is indeed the single most important goal toward making our school a reality—and, that's why we need your help.

Without it, we don't have students to teach. Without students, we can't receive the funding we need to pay our teachers and staff.

That's why Chris and Asher met with us (TÉLÉ LOUISIANE) this week at the Armand J. Brinkhaus Community Library in Sunset, next door to the future school. They wanted to film a call-to-action, urging parents to enroll their child before the deadline (see "MORE INFO" below).

• PHASE 1, Priority Lottery — DEADLINE: Friday, February 28, 2020
All applications for this round are due by 5:00 pm on Friday, February 28, 2020. Parents who apply within the deadline and meet the requirements will be placed in the lottery. Applicants will be selected by random computer drawing for our 96 available seats. Applicants not selected will be placed on a numbered waitlist.

Deadline, Phase 2: Open Enrollment
Applications will reopen a week after the lottery, once the lottery priorities have been assigned. Open enrollment will be on a first-come, first-serve basis after all waiting list priorities have been assigned. Phase II applicants must meet all requirements to be accepted into AFS. Though not required, interested parties are encouraged to learn more about the school at a Parent Interest Meeting, which are being held throughout St. Landry Parish. The times and dates for meetings can be found on the AFS Facebook page and website.
