The Quick and the Dead | The Five-Dollar Gun – One Fancy Sales Pitch, One Cheapest Piece of Crap 🔫
In The Quick and the Dead (1995), Sam Raimi's stylish and brutal Western, former outlaw-turned-preacher Cort (Russell Crowe) has been forced into the deadly quick-draw tournament run by the town's ruthless ruler, John Herod (Gene Hackman) 🏜️🎯. To ensure Cort can't shoot his way out of town, Herod drags him to the local gun shop — owned by none other than the brash young "Kid" (Leonardo DiCaprio) 🔫😎.
The Kid, ever the salesman, proudly lays out his finest merchandise on the counter. He picks up a gleaming Colt Single Action Army — polished nickel finish, custom grips, a real beauty ✨. "I got offered $120 for this Colt," he says, tossing it to Cort, who spins it effortlessly on his fingers 🤠. Cort hands it back. He has no money. "The Lord provides me with everything I need," he says flatly 😇.
Herod isn't interested in charity. He looks at The Kid and asks: "What's the cheapest gun you got? Not in the case. I mean the cheapest piece of worthless crap you got in the whole miserable store." 😏
The Kid's face falls. He pauses, then disappears into the back. When he returns, he slaps a worn, beat-up revolver onto the counter — a Colt 1851 Navy with a Richards-Mason cartridge conversion, scratched, dented, and thoroughly pathetic 🔫💀. "Five bucks," he says, clearly unimpressed with his own merchandise .
Herod grins. "Sold."
As The Kid reaches for ammunition, Herod stops him cold: "No. The preacher here's got the Lord on his side. He only needs one bullet. Just one." ✋🔫
The Kid protests: "That gun shoots straight. I wouldn't sell it if it didn't." But Cort waves him off: "It's okay, Kid. I won't draw."
Herod leans in: "Sure you will. I know you, Cort. When it comes down to it, you'll pull the trigger." 😈
Cort walks out of that shop with the worst gun in town, one bullet per duel, and a death sentence hanging over his head. And The Kid — who dreamed of selling custom Colts to legends — is left standing behind his counter, having just sold a five-dollar piece of junk to a man who might not live to see sunrise 🌅💀. In Redemption, even the gun sales are a tragedy. 🎯
