Thru-axle versus quick release skewer and then disc brakes versus rim brakes on road bikes.

In this video, Rob Eva (GM Sram Australia) talks to us about why he’s a fan of disc brakes on road bikes (over rim brakes).

Rob starts off by discussing the benefits of thru axle, showing the way you can mount the wheel and the removal of the thru axle. Explaining that the system is less prone to error in comparison to the traditional quick release skewer system on a bike wheel. We also discuss the impact the width on the front end and back end of the bike has on aerodynamics.

Then we move onto disc vs rim brakes. As I have experienced issues with disc brakes, notably rubbing, squealing, adjusting, and ultimately getting quiet, Rob discusses the protocol he uses to ensure disc brakes aren’t making noise or a sudden squeal. Here, Rob discusses 140 vs 160 disc rotor, and the benefits he’s seen with 160. Rob also explains the issues with using rim brakes in terms of heat. Notably, the way the braking system heats up the tyre and tube, which can create tyre blowouts for cyclists.

Will rim brakes become extinct? I ask Rob this question and he explains what he’s seeing within the industry.
