Converting a Kubota from Pin On to Quick Attach Bucket

It's frustrating to have a tractor with a pin-on bucket. To change implements you have to drive out four pins and then perfectly line up the attachment you're putting on and drive the pins back in. It's a 30 minute job if everything has been properly greased. With a skid-loader compatible quick attach system you simply raise two levers, curl out of the attachment you want off the tractor, then curl back in the attachment you want to use and lock the levers down. If you're seasoned at getting such a system attached it probably takes under 2 minutes.

If you're stuck with a pin-on system, you may not be aware that quick attach conversion kits are available. Today we're going to show such a system being installed on a Kubota LA1150A loader owned by Marvin, who lives about an hour from me.

Marvin bought his Kubota from a neighbor, and likes everything about it, BUT, it had a pin-on bucket and he wants to use a grapple, a bale spike and possibly pallet forks. He ordered this quick attach conversion: https://bit.ly/2FOmYsS , and then allowed me to film the installation.

There are two parts to a loader quick attach kit, a faceplate that goes on the front end loader (the male part) and a weld-on bracket that goes on the loader bucket once the pin mounts are removed or cut (the female part). The face plate goes on easily, especially with two people working together, the weld-on bracket needs to be installed by an experienced welder.

To install the quick attach faceplate we first removed the small bolts that hold the four pins on, with the bucket face down to make them easily accessible. Before removing the pins we tilted the bucket back so it was resting on the ground. Then we drove the pins out so the bucket was completely off the tractor.

Next we attached a chain around a hook that had been welded on the bucket and lifted it into our pickup bed to be taken to a local machine shop. Then we installed the new quick attach faceplate, inserted the pins and reinstalled the bolts that hold the pins in place. At that point, any attachment that fits a skid loader will fit this front end loader. It opens up a whole new world of available tools to go on the front of the tractor.

Next we took a trip to a highly recommended machine shop about 15 minutes away. They were waiting for us and immediately unloaded the bucket and went to work. They torched off a segment of the old pin brackets, being careful to keep the parts left on the bucket at the same angle as the original pin holes so as to not negatively affect the geometry of the bucket operation. They then welded the female quick attach faceplate on the bucket and braced it in appropriate places. This process wasn't cheap, but it's a professional job that will never come loose and it's a whole lot nicer that either Marvin or I could have done. It was well worth what it cost.

In the end, the whole install took less than 7 hours, most of that waiting for the bucket welding job to be done. It will open up a whole new world for Marvin with attachments that he can now utilize on his tractor.
