How I Managed My Dogs with a Stranger in the Home 🐶 #shorts
Having work done in the home can be stressful for our dogs! 😖 Whether your dogs like people or not, frequently, we have to keep them away from that work that is being done.
These were some clips from last week where we had one worker come over to measure our kitchen for the new countertops we are getting tomorrow. Now, he was only here for an hour, and it was just him. What I ultimately decided for my own dogs, is it would be in their best interest to not really be totally aware that there was someone else in our home. It wasn’t worth stressing them out for just an hour, especially when we were going to do it all over again the following week to an even larger degree.
So, some heavy management here. I have a baby gate that goes across my office door, AND I have a physical door to block visuals. I used that and the volume of my tv to block out most of the sound coming from the kitchen. I prepped enough treats ahead of time to have plenty to use throughout that hour, and we tucked ourselves away. The way this worked even better is that my husband was home and able to help be with the contractor so I could focus on the dogs. This routine would not have worked the same way if it were just me since I also needed to work in this room.
This wasn’t perfect, it never will be! Fen became aware of the person the last 5-10 minutes he was here by smelling him through the door. Then he had a small temper tantrum about it. But it didn’t matter at that point, I had already basically achieved the goal of just getting them through that hour in as low stress a way as possible.
Tomorrow the routine will be completely different, as I will be making my dogs aware that there are people in the house. It will be impossible to hide that from them, and unrealistic for me to be giving out treats for hours on end. I will film what I can and check back with you all on how that goes!
For reference, my dogs are generally excited about people coming in the home. We have worked hard to get Fenway there. But he has complex feelings about strangers, and Wrigley has feelings about stranger men coming to work on the house.
