The use of sexual violence by Israeli soldiers and settlers has been thrown in the spotlight after a New York Times column brought long-term claims into the mainstream US media.

Critics accused the Times of falsely depicting individual abuses as a systemic Israeli pattern.

The Times author, Nicholas Kristoff, bases his report on interviews with 14 men and women, many corroborated by secondary sources.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to sue the New York Times, accusing the paper of ‘blood libel’ - but why?
