BRUTAL May Update On The DEADLIEST Job On The Everest 2026 Season

In the 2026 Everest climbing season, Nepal issued a record-breaking 492 Everest permits — but before a single summit record was set, three Nepali Sherpa guides lost their lives in the deadliest stretch of the mountain: the Khumbu Icefall. With China closing the Tibet north side to foreign climbers, every expedition was forced through one deadly route maintained by just eight Icefall Doctors earning as little as $2,500 for the entire season. We cover the deaths of Lakpa Dende Sherpa, Dalit mountaineering pioneer Bijaya Ghimire Bishwakarma, and 20-year-old Phura Gyaljen Sherpa — grandson of Everest legend Ang Rita Sherpa — alongside the story of a 180-foot serac that shut down the mountain for 19 days and the dangerous alternate route that replaced it. As Kami Rita Sherpa broke his own world record with a 32nd Everest summit and 274 climbers reached the top in a single day, the human cost behind every summit photo remained largely unreported.
