Rhodophyta - Fluorescent Red Algae (FRET - Förster Resonance Energy Transfer)

Rhodophyta: Well known as red algae, but did you know it can fluoresce a brilliant neon orange? Under ultraviolet (UV) blacklight, this coastal sea plant life puts on an incredible glowing light show...but only if it's going from plant life to plant death.

This isn't bioluminescence, but something quite different. Due to a quantum physics phenomenon called FRET (Förster Resonance Energy Transfer), red algae short-circuits when its cells are dying. Instead of using sunlight for photosynthesis, it leaks that energy as visible light!

Join me as we dive deep into the biology, evolutionary adaptations, and physics of deep oceanic photosynthesis. We'll explore why this seaweed glows on the beach, how it survived an evolutionary arms race in deep water, and the amazing mechanics of its internal "quantum currency" exchange.

Perfect for: marine biology enthusiasts, physics teachers, chemistry students, and anyone curious about glowing algae.
