▶️ How to do the iodine clock reaction:
Step 1: Add 128 mL of warm distilled water into a container.
Step 2: Crush a 500 mL caplet of Vitamin C.
Step 3: Dissolve the crushed Vitamin C in the warm water.
Step 4: Stir in 12 mL of 10% povidone-iodine.
Step 5: In a separate container, add 40 mL of boiling water.
Step 6: In the boiling water, stir in 200 mg of cornstarch.
Step 7: In the water and cornstarch mixture, add 100 mL of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Step 8: Combine both mixtures, mixing them well, and watch for their reaction.
▶️ How the iodine clock reaction works:
Triiodide reacts with starch to create a darkly colored compound. This reaction is only allowed to take place once another chemical reaction has run its course. You can even change the speed of the reaction by changing the concentration of the reactants. This is simple kinetics, also known as the speed of chemical reactions.
▶️ A couple of tips in case your color change is happening slowly:
1. Make sure that everything is dissolved really well.
2. Heat up the solution.
