Eric with his Mauser 71/84 (manufactured 1888)
The Mauser model 71/84 was originally a .43 caliber single-shot rifle developed in 1871. Then, in 1884, the model 71 design was improved upon with the addition of a tubular magazine that held 8 rounds. The Mauser 71/84 also has a magazine cutoff, which allows one to keep rounds in reserve in the magazine and shoot singly, loading one at a time.
In this video, I only load the magazine once at the beginning and then just load singly for the rest of the video.
To my knowledge, the original charge was 75 grains of black powder. For the purpose of this match (most shots at 100 yards or so), I had to reduce the load to about 60 grains to improve the performance of the piece.
I am still learning how this piece behaves but have been enjoying it immensely.
Also, I would like to extend an extra thank you to my friend Joe, whose iPhone camera work has made all of these videos possible.
