Ireland 1806 Farthing: The Mad King’s Union #coincollecting #history

Did you know that Ireland and the UK were under the rule of the same king? It all started with the "Mad King"—George III—who, despite his bouts of insanity, oversaw the Act of Union in 1801, merging Ireland and Great Britain into one kingdom.

Here is the 1806 Irish Farthing, minted just five years after the union. On the obverse, we see George III’s portrait, while the reverse features the Gaelic harp, a proud symbol of Ireland.
