HOW I EVALUATE CAT FOOD
1. Product name
2. Ingredients list
3. Guaranteed analysis
4. Manufacturer

Look for product names that list one meat-based protein. If there are multiple ingredients in the name, they should both be meat-based protein.

Example: "Beef and hoki" is ideal. "Beef and rice" is not ideal.

Avoid "with" and "flavor" in the product name. "with beef" has between 3-24.9% beef. "Beef flavor" has between 0-2.9% beef.

Instead, look for "dinner" "recipe" "feast" "nuggets" "platter" "entree" etc. descriptive words, and only meat-based protein ingredients in the name.

Avoid grains, unnecessary carbs, colors, and chemical preservatives. Look for whole sources of ingredients and avoid general blanket terms like "by-products".

Example: "Beef, beef tongue, beef heart, beef liver, beef blood" is ideal. "Beef by-products, meat by-products" is not ideal.

Most labels do not list carbs so you have to figure it out on your own.

Use the guaranteed analysis to figure out the approximate amount of carbohydrates in the product.

Always convert the numbers to a dry matter basis (remove moisture).

Research the cat food brand manufacturer. You'd be surprised to know that many cat food brands are actually made by the same manufacturers that make junk food for humans.

Research "who owns *cat food brand name*" to find the parent company.

It is much more likely that a small, local business cares more about your cat than a billion-dollar company that produces 10 different cat food brands.
