5 Ways to Optimize Your Content to Appear in Google Discover and Get More Traffic

In this video, Whitney breaks down five different ways to optimize your content so that you can appear in Google Discover and ultimately get more traffic.

Firstly, what is Google Discover? Google Discover, formerly known as Google Feed, is a way of getting topics and news information to users on the home page without searching for them.

Some key features of Google Discover are topic headers, location-based content, content feedback, and multiple languages.

Steps to Appear in Google Discover

1) Use more unique images and video, and set these to specific sizes. Features images for Google Discover need to be at least 1200 px wide and enabled by the max-image-preview:large setting, which can be achieved by using AMP. The more original and enticing your meta image, the better, because if you are pulled into Discover, you’ll want to stand out.

2) Use structured data, or schema mark up. Structured data markups are an effective way to increase your chances of appearing in Google Discover because Google’s crawler, the Googlebot, needs to ‘read’ your content in a way that will allow it to pull the information to use it effectively and ensure its relevance to users. There are three major ways Google uses structured data: featured snippets, top stories carousel, and the 'people also ask' expandable panels.

3) Write topical and evergreen articles on similar topics in your niche. You can use tools like Google Trends to find topical information. For evergreen content, consider how you can write content that includes facts and information that will never change, like lists and instructionals.

4) Have your content visited from sources besides organic search. This can include a regular newsletter, social media, or sites like Reddit or Quora.

5) Remember E-A-T: Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Publishers can support E-A-T in a number of ways, the three most common being to cite external sources, be transparent about any affiliate monetization, and to have clear author bios attached to articles.
