You Need to Fail to Succeed (Marketing Yourself, Self Development, Motivation) #MarketingMinute 120

Successful people love to win, but they realize that they have to be willing to risk losing on occasion if they want to push the limits of innovation. Here are four ways that you can develop a mindset where failure can be one of the most productive factors in your long-term success.

Number One: Create an environment where you and your team are not only given permission to take risks and fail, but where you’re encouraged and even required to do so. Count failures not as negative setbacks, but as learning experiences and steps toward your ultimate successes.

Number Two: Keep a “failure journal” where you write down your failures for the day or week, from the relatively minor ones to the most fantastic ones. After each entry, explore what you learned from your failures and how those failures will help you succeed in the future.

Number Three: To feel comfortable with the idea of experiencing failure, you need to budget for failure. This means adding extra time, money, and personnel to project budgets so that you’ll take risks instead of bowing to the temptation to “play it safe” by doing what you know will work because you didn’t allocate the resources to fail.

Number Four: Develop the attitudes and skillsets that lead to productive failures and that protect you from the discouragement that often accompanies failure. Become inquisitive, adventurous, and competitive. Diversify your sources of enjoyment and self-worth. And focus your pre-action planning and your post-action reflections on self-improvement rather than only on achievement. Consider failures to be experiments, and if you learn from the experiment, it’s successful.

If you live by the philosophy that “failure is not an option,” you’re unlikely to take the necessary risks that will allow you to innovate, learn, progress, and find long-term success.
