7 Things BEFORE YOU ARRIVE In Canada. Things To Do Before Moving To Canada in 2020. #DocumentsCanada

These are the things I wish I knew before moving to Canada. The list is not really long: documents, English, medical, accommodation, clothes, school systems in Canada and the mental side.

1. Improve or learn English. This is huge, even if you’re moving to a French province. You need English to be a part of Canada or French if you’re moving to a French province. I am not going to say you can just learn as you move here. No. You need to understand one simple thing: once you move to Canada, you will be so busy settling in your new life, that there will be little time to learn English. This is why I think you can leverage the time you have at home to put your head down and put your maximum effort into improving English. It would be really beneficial for you to take one of the English exams, such as IELTS General, so that you could show a proof of your English. You would need to provide the exam score for immigration anyway, so why not start preparing right now.
2. Bring all your documents. (With copies). Here I am not just talking about some obvious ones, like passport and birth certificate. Documents you need for Canada: school diploma, criminal record check, university degree, academic transcripts, references from former employers, medical records, drivers license, marriage or divorce certificates, children’s documents, even certificates of participation in conferences or volunteering. (This is a list of documents you’ll need in Canada). This is important, you also need to take these documents to a certified translation agency, because you never know if you will find an agency in Canada that works with your language, and even if there’s one, they will most certainly charge you way too much. And don’t forget to get an affidavit from the agency. Affidavit is a document in which the person has sworn to had provided legal assistance.
3. Purchase a first aid kit. This is so important, as some medicine that is over the counter in Europe, in Canada requires a doctors prescription. What medication to bring to Canada: of pain killers, antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication. Now in a case of an emergency you have medication. Please make sure to keep it in your check-in baggage. Another point is to have a medical check up: please check you teeth, as a single trip to a dentist here in Canada can cost you up to $2000 dollars. I am serious. Check your eyes, get blood tested. Everything.
4. Find temporary accommodation in Canada. The reason I think it’s great to first live at a temporary accommodation is that if you get an apartment, let’s say online, there’s a huge possibility you might be scammed or the place will not correspond with the pictures and description. Also, upon physical arrival you can get to know the area and see for yourself if you would want to stay there. So what are some good temporary options? I recommend Airbnb if you’re on a tight budget or a hotel on Booking.com if you have more money.
5. If you’re thinking which items to take while going to Canada - buy warm clothes. No matter where you are in Canada, you will be cold in the winter. Make sure to get coats that are warm indeed, I can recommend brands like Canada Goose, Quartz Co., The North Face. Also, it’s a great idea to get gloves and warm hats.
6. Find information about education system in Canada. If you’re not going to school yourself, but you have kids then it’s a great idea to see what the education system is like in your province, and research good schools in the city where you intended to live. Let’s take Ontario, for example, in Ontario they have early childhood education institutions where children aged 0 to 6 can prepare to enter one of the 3900 elementary schools that include grades from kindergarten to grade 8. Afterwards, it’s secondary school, where children study from grade 9 to 12. Canada believes in equal opportunities that’s why public schools are free, even for immigrants.
7. Leave your home country at peace. Let me explain. You are about to come to Canada and leave your friends and family behind, please thank everyone for what they have done for you, for everything they taught you, even people who you weren’t that close to. You never know how life might go, so not to have any regrets later - leave at peace.
If this helped me, it most likely will help you when you move to Canada. #ImmigrationToCanada doesn’t have to be expensive or scary. Just be prepared.
