HEY MOM- How did you DIY a barn door
We all know and love barn doors.
I wanted to integrate one of my very own into this home, as I had in my previous house. Of course, it needed to fit my mid-century modern style, so I came up with a sleek design with this tambour effect that I love.
I try to incorporate repetition in my design elements, so we did the same tambour effect under my kitchen island, to really tie things together. If you’re looking for a showstopper or a way to spruce up an element of your home, check out how I achieved the look in this Youtube Tutorial.
Barn door steps
1. Cut a piece of oak plywood to the dimensions of your door jam allowing for at least 1 inch of overlap on both sides.
2. Iron on oak edge banding around the circumference of the plywood
3. Trace your hardware on to the top of the door, use a multi tool to chisel out enough space to recess your hardware.
4. Cut 3/4 inch strips of oak wood with a table saw
5. Place your oak strips on the plywood
6. Use 3/4 inch spacers to create even separation between strips
7. Secure your hardware to the door
8. Secure oak strips with finish nails over top of the hardware.
9. Instal your barn door rail
(For gold look spray paint before Installation)
10. Hang your door
11. Cover up nail holes with wood filler and lightly sand.
