Married his girlfriend Kathy Silva at Madison Square Garden before 21,000 guests on June 4, 1974 to help boost attendance for a concert that wasn't selling very well. The event was dreamed up by Stone and Silva and his manager and turned out to be an enormous success. But the marriage wasn't so successful, Silva filed for divorce four months later.
He and his backing group, The Family Stone, were voted the 43rd Greatest Artists in Rock 'n' Roll by Rolling Stone.
Shares a birthday with fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Mike Love of The Beach Boys and Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.
Was a disc jockey and record producer in the San Francisco area before becoming a recording artist. As a producer he worked for Autumn Records, which was The Beau Brummels' label, and he produced the Bobby Freeman 1965 hit "C'mon and Swim" on that label.
