Why "Gut Feelings" Are Real: The Second Brain Inside You.!! #science #facts #history
You have two brains. One in your head — and one hidden in your gut.
And the second one might be the one actually in charge.
It's called the enteric nervous system, and it contains around
500 million neurons — more than your entire spinal cord. Scientists
literally call it "the second brain." And here's the unsettling part:
it can operate completely independently. Even when the vagus nerve
connecting it to your brain is cut, the gut keeps right on working.
It gets stranger. Around 90% of your body's serotonin — the
"happiness chemical" that antidepressants target — is produced in
your gut, not your brain. And the trillions of bacteria living in
your gut produce chemicals that may influence your cravings, your
mood, and even your decisions.
So that "gut feeling" you can't explain? It's not a metaphor.
It's your second brain sending signals up to your first one —
often before you've consciously figured out what's wrong.

THE SCIENCE
The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a division of the autonomic
nervous system that governs the gastrointestinal tract. Containing
roughly 500 million neurons, it can function autonomously from the
central nervous system. Approximately 90-95% of the body's serotonin
is synthesized by enterochromaffin cells in the gut lining. The gut
microbiome produces neuroactive compounds and communicates with the
brain via the vagus nerve and the gut-brain axis, influencing mood,
appetite, and stress responses.
