Munchausen By Proxy - Interview with Victim Author Julie Gregory

MBP comes in many different forms and extremes.

But they all share the commonality of a legal caretaker or guardian representing their wards as sicker than they actually are to medical/mental health providers and other social workers.

They do this sometimes knowingly, and sometimes unknowingly - sometimes they actually cause the symptoms through poisoning or or intentional injury, sometimes they will simply characterize their wards as sick by making up symptoms that either don't exist or are exaggerations and misreporting.

But the result is the same, improper diagnosis, unnecessary treatments and medications, and an official imprimatur of illness or disability by health professionals and public services, where there in fact isn't any.

The goals have a common theme also, to publicly present themselves as heroic and caring, fighting for the benefit of those under their care, and by designating their target as ill they gain extra sympathy, respect and entitlements.

An often sad fact is that the abuser manages to convince a health care provider of an illness that does not actually exist, that provider now, and all that had relied upon it, has a strong incentive to reaffirm their diagnosis, in order to avoid the appearance of incompetence and liability; competent and attentive health care experts should not have been fooled by the MBP caretaker and should have made their own independent assessment before diagnosing a non-existent malady.
