The minor 251 chord progression is built from the harmonic minor scale. It uses chord II, V and I from the scale.

The 1st chord of a minor 251 is always a m7(b5) - also known as a half diminished. The 2nd chord is always a dominant 7 chord, usually with altered extensions such as the flat 9.

For the last chord (chord I), there are 3 options. A minor 7, a minor major7, or a minor 6. All of these work well and produce different harmonic qualities.

The minor II-V-I takes a lot of time to master but they are great fun, and are also the building blocks to jazz so will really help you learn jazz.
