The U.S. government urgently needs to tighten its budget, but the consequences won’t be pretty, and the public will feel the impact.

That’s the latest word from Chamath Palihapitiya, a seasoned venture capitalist and CEO of Social Capital.

In 2010, the United Kingdom faced a major budget crisis. The government was spending far more than it was bringing in, leading to a deficit equal to 10% of the country’s total economy.

To fix this, they implemented austerity measures, cutting spending to bring the budget closer to balance.

Over the next few years, the deficit steadily dropped, reaching 3% by 2016. While this reduced borrowing, it also frustrated the public and fueled the anger that led to Brexit.

Now, the U.S. faces a similar challenge. With a deficit just under 7%, the goal is to bring it down to 3%, much like the U.K. did. The big question is whether spending cuts will have the same effect—or lead to unintended consequences.
