Chopard unveils the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival

"So the Palme d'Or, we are making it since 1998, since we became an official partner of the festival. And in that year we redesigned, Caroline Scheufele - our president - she redesigned the Palme d'Or as it is today. And she made it into a high jewelry piece. So we make it every year. We start a few months before the festival. It's the same design apart from two years for a special anniversary we did a few changes. But it's the same festival. It's made in fermine gold. So in ethical gold. It's solid gold. The Palme, it's about 118g of gold. You have 19 needle leaves. And then after we put on the crystal, a rock crystal, that is shaped like an emerald cut diamond."

"We borrow (sic- lend) only for the night and not throughout the festival. And it has already started before, actually, the festival where we get to, we send out lookbooks of some of the creations we are going to have here in Cannes, or the celebrity sends the dress and then we try to propose a few pieces that will work with the dress or we send a lookbook first with the jewelry. And then the celebrity falls in love with a piece, and she gets a dress to match the piece so it can work everywhere. But then after the final choice is always in Cannes, because it's with the pieces in your hands that you really see. Also, it doesn't look the same on picture and in real life, and you have to wear it to actually fit it and see if you if it fits or not."

"I remember last year we had a really nice look from Natalie Portman. She was a Godmother of the Chopard trophy. And she wore a beautiful blue sapphire necklace It looked really amazing. She had the sequin, the blue dress, and it was really like a dream. I remember also of the year before we had our ambassador Julia Roberts, in Cannes, and she was wearing more than 100 carat yellow diamond, like, really priceless, piece and really exceptional to see. We had taken it out of the safe just for her. It was such a special moment."

STORYLINE:
Ahead of the opening ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Chopard has showed off the event's top prize - the world famous Palme d'Or.

The award, which contains 118g of gold, set in crystal, is the highest prize awarded at the annual event in the south of France. The Swiss company has been making the trophy since 1998 when they became festival partners.

Chopard also provide red carpet jewelry for guests attending the festival.
