The longest bridge in the Philippines is finally getting off the ground, yes this is the Panguil Bay Bridge, a project that would span over 3.7 kilometers. This structure will serve as a gateway in connecting Tangub and Tubod cities in Northern Mindanao and it is expected to reduce travel time between the two municipalities from the current 2 hours and 30 minutes to just an unbelievable 7 minutes.

The design and construction of this mega bridge will be carried out by a joint venture of South Korean Firms, starting with Yooshin Engineering Corporation, Pyunhwa Engineering Consultants and Kyong-Ho Engineering & Architects, along with Philippine Companies. These contractors are famous for developing several world-class infrastructures around the region. It is also why Filipinos could expect that the Panguil Bay Bridge will be the same.

This master plan has an estimate cost of 7.3 billion pesos and would undergo the Build-Transfer-Operate scheme of the government’s “build build build” program, and would be financed by both a South Korean Major Bank and the Philippines Government, foreign loans will amount to over 5 billion pesos and the rest will be handled by the authority.

This was introduced way back in 1998 and was even declared by the previous president as a crucial infrastructure project in 2006, but it took several years before it got finally approved and in 2018 it had its ground breaking ceremony and was organized by the Department of Public Works and Highways to have its construction begin in 2021.

Based on a study, The Panguil Bay Bridge will have a height of over 320 meters long and feature two carriageways with 14.5 meters wide. It would also include several frameworks that would be integrated on to the structure.

The biggest benefits of this massive project would surely benefit those who live in the Cities of Northern Mindanao, as they are poised to gain most of this multi-billion infrastructure plan as the transport of goods, service and people will be reduced significantly, and a proposal this big would boost business activities and land value in and around the project. It can also be said that it will save millions of cash every year from fuel related and vehicle maintenance.

The site construction will likewise produce thousands of jobs to local communities, as this bridge will need basic labor to engineering work and even after it has been completed it will still need to be maintained and operated and likewise create opportunities for the job seekers.

While this project may sound good it still comes with a lot of risks to the environment and the people, that is why feasibility studies continued on for years by multiple consultant firms to ensure that there the threats will be minimized. It was only until the final feasibility study was performed by SAMBO Engineering, this effort was accomplished and funded by the Ministry’s of South Korea it might also be why they were given the award to work on the bridge as they have done years of work and research for the said plan.

According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, the bridge is still on work for its design and will be completed by the end of 2020, and expected to start its construction in the initial quarter of 2021.
