Hamlet Summary and Critical Analysis

In this video, we are discussing Hamlet by William Shakespeare. At first, we take a look at the detailed Hamlet summary. Then we look at Hamlet as a Revenge play and tragedy. Finally, we discuss the 7 Soliloquies of Hamlet. The Hamlet Summary and Analysis will help you develop a good understanding of the play.
The complete name of the play is The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. It is the longest play of William Shakespeare. Set in Elsinore Castle in Denmark, Tragedy of Hamlet of William Shakespeare tells the story of Prince Hamlet and his revenge against his uncle Claudius who had murdered his father to seize his throne and marry Hamlet's mother.
Before discussing the plot, we talk about the main characters of Hamlet. We begin our discussion with Hamlet Summary Act 1 where Hamlet meets the ghost of his father and decides to avenge his father's murder.
After looking at the summary, we discuss Hamlet as a Revenge play and tragedy. Revenge Tragedy Hamlet is considered one of the best tragedies of Shakespeare. Hamlet tragedy rises above the average revenge play and turns out to be a great tragedy.
Revenge tragedy in English Literature has 5 part plot structure - exposition, Anticipation, Confrontation, delay and fulfillment. These are the 5 revenge tragedy features. Once you understand the revenge tragedy definition, you can understand how Hamlet fulfills the criteria of Aristotelian tragedy. One of the most important revenge tragedy elements is the tragic flaw (hamartia) of the protagonist that brings his downfall. Hamlet's tragic flaw is his inability to act or act fast enough.
The 7 Soliloquy of Hamlet shows his indecive nature. You can find Hamlet Soliloquy analysis in this video. Hamlet first Soliloquy occurs in Act 1 scene 2 before he meets the ghost. It shows Hamlet as a reflective person. The Soliloquy Hamlet to be or not to be occurs in Act 3 Scene 1 where Hamlet reflects about the difference between passion and reason.
