What Pre-American Hawaii Was Really Like

Today, Hawaii is known as one of the premier tourist destinations in the United States and the world. Its pristine beaches and tropical weather bring millions of tourists every year to escape harsh winters, enjoy some sand and surf, or even get hitched.

But before it became part of the United States, did you know that it was an independent nation and unified recognized kingdom in 1810? It remained a monarchy until 1893, when Western businessmen overthrew the monarchy that led to the annexation by the U.S. in 1898.

Hawaiian culture is still prevalent on the Hawaiian Islands but what was Pre-American Hawaii really like? What was the make-up of the culture and the land which was dominated primarily by Polynesian chiefdoms?
