Cute Baby Wolf Snake Tries to Eat Gecko Lizard - Can He Swallow it? (Philippines Wolf Snake Feeding)
Please share this nature in my garden movie.
I was fascinated watching this baby Philippines Wolf Snake (non-venomous to humans, small reptiles and animals) trying to swallow a gecko, who's head was far bigger than the snakes own head. I know snakes can open their mouths pretty wide to swallow their prey whole, but could this cute little snake actually open it's mouth wide enough or would it have to give up it's prize? Lunchtime...
This battle for survival by the gecko lasted for around 40 minutes. It was already well underway before I arrived with my camera. Immediately after, I contact my good friend and reptile expert (herpetologist) Rowland at Indigo Expeditions, to find out what type of snake it was. He replied,
'It is a common wolf snake (Lycodon capucinus). Wolf snakes are cool, they are so named because they have enlarged teeth (around where canines would be if they were a mammal). Those teeth are not fangs, they are not hollow and do not transport venom. Wolf snakes are harmless. Did the snake managed to finish its meal?' Watch to find out :-)...
According to Exotics Lair channel - on their video: Snake eats ONE lizard.. poops Everywhere!!! - These non-venomous snakes are endemic to Asia and feed primarily on small lizards and frogs.
Thank you to everyone who has commented on my video. Many people think this snake is a common Krait, which is a venomous snake. I double checked this with Rowland. He told me 'The wolf snake mimics the common krait and it can be difficult to tell them apart. The easiest thing to look for is that common kraits have a row of highly enlarged scales that run down the spine and wolf snakes do not. The shape of the head is different too, but that is a much more subtle differences.'
