Gregor MacGregor: History's Greatest Scam Artist? (2/2)

This second video of the two-part series examines the life of historical con artist Scotsman, Gregor MacGregor (24 December 1786 – 4 December 1845). The video examines, in moderate detail, MacGregor's earlier life in the British army, his escapades in revolutionary Latin America, his time back in Europe conducting the various Poyais confidence schemes, before finally retiring in Caracas, Venezuela in 1838.

He was to be buried with full military honours following his death in 1845 (aged 58), having remarkably evaded conviction after his acquittal in France. For MacGregor's case, and perhaps with some degree of both luck and skill, crime really *did* pay, and injustice had prevailed in that unstable colonial era during the Napoleonic period, where opportunity for selfish gain abounded.

His story now serves as a useful cautionary tale, warning people against the dangerous illusions of predatory confidence tricksters and wily con artists.
