When Jay Mac was up on a moving train with a can in his hand, he never once reached for a substance. The adrenaline was the drug.

He’s a graffiti writer - an alter ego on the street, built to get up where nobody else would. Not just on the billboard. Above it. Subway systems. Freight lines. Rooftops. Trains still rolling into the station. You slip into some cutty spot and your whole body lights up.

Here’s the part he can’t separate out: the same thinking that told him he could live off his passion - the wild, against-the-grain bet most people would call insane - was the same thinking that told him the drug was a good idea too. Same engine. Same all-in. He just pointed it at two things at once, and for years they ran hand in hand.

The wall never needed a substance. The using was the other half of the same wiring.

He built an entire identity out of chasing the rush. Recovery is where he’s learning to aim that same engine at something that doesn’t cost him his life.
