First Day of Spring 2025 - The Equinox is Here!

First Day of Spring 2025 - The Equinox is Here!

Did you know that spring officially starts when the vernal equinox arrives? And it's not always March 21.

The equinox is when the Earth's axis isn't tilted toward or away from the sun, making day and night almost equal lengths around the globe. That's literally why it's called "equinox," from Latin meaning "equal night."

Interestingly, spring in the Northern Hemisphere can begin anytime between March 19 and 21, depending on Earth's exact orbit that year. And here's a fun fact: during the equinox, the sun shines directly above the equator, lighting up both the North and South Poles simultaneously—the only time of year this happens!

Cultures around the world celebrate this celestial event. For instance, Iran's New Year, Nowruz, is based precisely on the spring equinox. And at Chichen Itza in Mexico, crowds gather to watch the sun create a stunning shadow that looks like a serpent slithering down the ancient pyramid of El Castillo.

And while astronomical seasons follow Earth's orbit, meteorological seasons start neatly on the first day of certain months, like spring beginning on March 1, purely for simplicity.

So next time someone says spring always starts on March 21, remind them the universe doesn't follow our calendars!
