Cartoons for Science, Society and Change | Sumanta Baruah | TEDxSIBMBengaluru

A cartoon can offer a unique perspective to a topic through humor, satire, and visual metaphors.

Science cartoon, a genre of cartoon less familiar than a political cartoon, is an effective medium for science communication and popularisation.

A science cartoon can educate or inform people about a scientific topic or news, highlight the gravity of an environmental issue, satire superstitions, or subtly alert about the impact of technology on our social behavior.

Today we are face-to-face with both a troubled social atmosphere and an endangered planet. Rational thought and environmental awareness have become crucial like never. In view of this, both science and scientific temperament matter a lot and so does science cartoon, as a medium of science communication.

Let more science cartoons, science cartoonists, and interest in science cartoons join the winds of change. Sumanta Baruah is a cartoonist who draws mostly on topics of science, technology, and the environment. His cartoons simplify complex scientific topics, comment on the impact of technology on society and create awareness about environmental issues. Sumanta is a self-taught cartoonist and a software engineer by profession. He believes that cartoons are an effective medium for science communication. He has been drawing cartoons for the past two decades for English and Assamese publications, and his work has also been appreciated in national and international cartoon exhibitions. A solo exhibition of his science, technology, and environment cartoons, ‘Smile-with-Science', was also held in Indian Cartoon Gallery, Bengaluru in 2010. Sumanta Baruah is a cartoonist from India. His cartoons have been published in Current Science, Science Reporter, Resonance, Vigyan Jeuti, Drishti, Satsori, Journal of Assam Science Society, Prantik, Gonit Sora, Enajori and xahitya.org. His cartoons have been exhibited in two International Cartoon Festivals: 3rd Rhodes International Cartoon Exhibition, Greece (2006) and International Cartoon Festival, Iran (2006).
