Mangala Rupiniye - Jonpuri - Muthiah Bhagavatar | Bhavya Hari
Mavur Kali Temple
This is an exclusive album of seven rare compositions on the deity in the Kali Temple at Mavur,
situated near Thiruvarur in Tamil Nadu. This is a private temple built by Sir R. Srinivasa Sarma,
a journalist and publicist, and inaugurated in 1941.
An ardent devotee of Goddess Kali in Dakshineswar, Kolkata, Sir Sarma commissioned an exact
reproduction of the deity and built a miniature replica of the temple in Mavur. It remains a
private temple managed by the Trust it was bequeathed to.
This album is a compilation of krithis by Harikesanallur Shri. Muthiah Bahagvathar on the
Mavur Kali, presented by young artists, some of whom trace their lineage to Shri. Muthiah
Bhagavathar.
Sir Sarma was a patron of the arts and among the musicians who frequented Mavur was
Harikesanallur Shri. Muthaiah Bhagavathar. In order to commemorate the original
kumbabhishekam in 1941, Shri. Muthiah Bhagavathar composed seven stotrams on Mavur Kali,
set to specific ragams and talams.
In 2024, the Mavur temple celebrated a Kumbabhishekam and is frequented by locals and those
interested in its spiritual history.
Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi graciously devoted her time, focus and creative input to notate and
record the Mavur Kali krithis composed in the original ragams set by the composer, Shri.
Muthiah Bhagavathar.
This album is offered in memory of Shri. K. Nagarajan of Thanjavur, who started his career with
Sir Sarma and remained closely associated with Mavur and Maa Kali. This compilation is a
tribute by Shri. Nagarajan’s family to fulfil his heartfelt wish to popularize the krithis. We thank
all the artists involved in this beautiful ode to Maa Kali. May Her blessings always prevail!
