Reconstructed Norse longhouses at open-air museum sites in Scandinavia, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands have been tested for thermal performance under arctic conditions. The results surprised researchers: interior temperatures of 15–20°C maintained in ambient external temperatures of minus 15 to minus 20°C with a single central hearth fire burning four to six hours per day. The thermal performance ratio exceeds many modern conventionally constructed buildings on continuous central heating. The layered wall system, the kelp insulation filling, the sod roof, and the vertical air stratification management that produced those results were systematically suppressed by the medieval church as part of its Christianisation campaign in the North Atlantic settlements — and the communities that lost those building methods showed measurably worse cold-weather outcomes than those that maintained them.
