He Flew to Antarctica Alone at 19 — Then Got Trapped for 70 Days

In June 2025, 19-year-old Chinese-American pilot and social media influencer Ethan Guo
departed Punta Arenas, Chile, in his single-engine Cessna 182Q — supposedly on a local
flight. Instead, he turned south, crossed the treacherous Drake Passage, and landed
without authorization at Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Base on King George Island, Antarctica.

What followed was 70 days of polar detention, a criminal case under Chilean aviation law,
and an international debate about ambition, influencer culture, and the Antarctic Treaty.

Then, on February 12, 2026 — 230 days after the landing — his plane was finally flown
back to Chile. By a different pilot.
