“God’s Will”
By: Pastor Monique Belfield
Mark 3:35 (NIV) Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
It is important to know God’s will and to know that God is not in the business of keeping his will from us. Jesus said that His true relations are those who know and do the Father’s will.” Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Most believers want that kind of relationship but they don’t know what the will of God is.
If you want to know what God wants, you have to want what God wants.
I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about some issues she was having with her teenage daughter not listening or doing what she asked her to do. She made the statement “I just don’t tell her what to do anymore. She doesn’t listen to me anyway. “I can imagine that God may feel the same way at times.
We want to know everything about God’s will. But can we handle God’s will? Knowing God’s will can sometimes be difficult, because it requires patience. Something that we have very little of when we are anxious. We want to know and we want to know now. We want God to give us specifics, where to work, where to live, whom we should marry, and what car to buy etc. And when He doesn’t respond on our time, we so often do our own thing because it is too easy. But then afterwards we realize that it was our own will rather than the will of God that brought us to the situation that was definitely not to our advantage. The key is wanting and living in God’s will and not our own.
How do we go about living in the will of God?
First we have to have the desire to know and do God’s will. This is critical. There are many times when the answer will be found in the Word of God. Scripture is the only absolute guide to what ought to be the direction of our lives. (Psalms 119: 105-106 (NIV) Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. Here David is saying that God’s word will be the guide. It can’t be our guide if we do not read it. Understand the Bible is very clear on God’s revealed will. So it’s very important that we read the Word of God daily.
The second way to live in God’s will is by prayer. When in doubt, ASK! Prayer puts us in the proper position for guidance and submission. Prayer makes us open to God’s will. It is not enough just to think about knowing God’s will, or wanting it. We must pray to discover His will. (Psalms 143:10 (NIV) Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.) In the quietness of prayer, God often speaks in the “still small voice,” making clear what His will is for you.
Finally we have to covenant to follow God’s Word. Tell God that when you are seeking guidance and you find an answer in His Word, you will obey it and do exactly what He says to do. You won’t do things your own way or follow the laws of the world. You will only follow the Word of God and live in His will.
If you are walking closely with God then it is safe to say you are already in God’s will. Continue to have the desire to know and do God’s will, continue to commit to prayer to stay connected with the only One who knows what you need and when you need it, and keep your covenant to follow God’s Word, and watch how God will grant you the desires of His heart!!
